2015 Tour de Terra Cotta

2015 Tour de Terra Cotta

The Tour de Terra Cotta looks like it has become an August long weekend tradition and I was participating for my third time. Once again I signed up for the intermediate race… 52 km or 6 laps of the course… and for the second time I decided to ride the 40km from my house to the event in order to get in a good warmup.

The weather was looking good but it was pretty windy and I figured there was a ...

2015 Tour de Waterloo & Kitchener Twilight Crit

Kitchener Twilight Grand Prix

Last weekend was a busy one as Cycle Waterloo hosted two events … the Kitchener Twilight Grand Prix on Friday evening, and the Tour de Waterloo on Sunday morning. The Tour de Waterloo is one of my favourite road races of the year but I can’t say the same for the Twilight GP. Crit racing is just not my thing. Last year I raced the beginner/sportive category, and although I achieved my best placed finish (7th), it was still ...

2015 KW Classic

2015 KW Classic

The KW Classic was the final O Cup for 2015 and I was hoping to do well after a pretty disappointing season this year. Mark Chappel and I were the only two from Speed River Cycling Club so we didn’t have a lot of options when it came to strategy… either make the break, or win the sprint.

I lined up in the front row for the start, and held my position well the first time up the Hawkesville hill. The tempo ...

2015 Springbank Road Race

O Cup #3 was the Springbank Road Race and today was my third consecutive year participating. I’ve had mixed results at this criterium style race, held on a narrow 2.2 km course through Springbank Park in London. In 2013 I got dropped with 3 laps to go for the DNF. Then in 2014 I got my best O Cup result ever, finishing 11th in the M3 field. I haven’t done much racing since mid season last year and I didn’t really know what ...

2015 Good Friday Road Race

The Good Friday Road Race in Ancaster is the season opener in the Ontario Cup series and this was my third time participating.  This year, Mark Chappel joined me from Speed River Cycling Club and it was nice to have some company in M3 since Andy Mill upgraded. This will be my third year in M3 and I would really like to earn enough points to move up. I was eager to do well, but my chances in a bunch sprint were not very ...

2014 KW Classic

2014 KW Classic

So far this year I’ve only raced two O-Cups as I was in Belfast for the start of the Giro d’Italia and missed the GCRR and the Niagara Classic. I was eager to get my 3rd race in  and looking forward to the KW Classic on the new course at Hawkesville. On Saturday morning I was getting my bike ready when I realized that I had forgotten to register before the Thursday night deadline! I was so bummed. Thankfully somebody at ...

2014 Springbank Park

Springbank was my second race of the year and I needed to redeem myself after last year’s DNF when I got dropped with 3 laps to go.
The 2.2km course winds through Springbank Park in London and is very narrow in places, with high curbs that can make it difficult to navigate in a pack. I witnessed two crashes in my race last year, and saw another rider launched into the trees after missing the first corner. They say the ...

2014 Good Friday Road Race

It feels like forever since I rode my bike, raced or even updated this blog. After such a long cold winter with almost zero riding since November 2013, I was not feeling very optimistic about my first race of 2014… the Good Friday Road Race. Last year I had stayed with the pack until the final surge for the finish, then my legs gave out and I got dropped, finishing more than 30 seconds behind.
Up until today I had ...

2013 Blue Mountain Centurion

2013 Blue Mountain Centurion

This was my third time participating in the Centurion at Blue Mountain, and my second time doing the C100. My goal was just to try and beat last year’s time and hopefully to finish in the top 100.

623 riders lined up at the start line, which was considerably fewer than last year. I was fairly close to the front, joined by Andy Mill and Andrew Krucker from Speed River Cycling Club. The weather was grey and cloudy, but the temperature was quite comfortable, around 15 ...

2013 Tour de Terra Cotta

2013 Tour de Terra Cotta

The Tour de Terra Cotta is a popular Citizen’s event that is held in the Caledon area during the civic holiday on the first Monday of August each year. The 8.7 km course is on closed roads, so unlike most races, there is no yellow line rule. It turned out to be a very well organized event and included neutral feeding. The schedule included a Youth Cup series, a 26 km Beginner race, a 52 km Intermediate race and a 104 ...
