2013 Provincial Road Race Championship

2013 Provincial Road Race Championship

Today I headed up to Bradford with Andy Mill to participate in the Ontario Provincial Road Race Championships at the Holland Marsh Challenge. The course was almost 12 km long and featured some fast flat and downhill sections before a 3 km steady climb towards the finish line.  Although this hill was not too steep, it would be a challenge to keep pace with the field and maintain contact. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it ...

O-Cup Season Summary

O-Cup Season Summary

A rookie’s first season racing O-Cup

For 2013 I set a goal to compete in the entire O-Cup series. There were seven events in total that included various road races, a crit and a time trial, which were hosted all across southern Ontario. Thanks to some encouragement and comraderie from my race buddy Andy Mill, and the unfailing support of my amazing wife, I accomplished the mission and started all seven events.

Based on my experience, here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to invest in a ...

2013 Tour de Waterloo

2013 Tour de Waterloo

My first Podium! (sort of)

I was pretty pumped to take part in my second Tour de Waterloo. This is my favourite cycling event that I’ve done so far. It’s well organized, great value for the cost, and conveniently close to home.  The opportunity to ride with many elite racers and the rolling 130km course challenged me to the max. Contrary to last week’s miserable Centurion experience, my bike was adjusted and ready to race well in advance, and I had gone to bed early ...

2013 Centurion Horseshoe Valley

2013 Centurion Horseshoe Valley

I was looking forward to the 2013 Centurion at Horseshoe Valley. Last year I had ridden a good pace and had finished in the second group, despite starting a long way from the front. This year I had higher hopes. I feel fitter and have gained some good experience from racing the O-Cup series. My plan was to start at the front and try and hang on to the end with the front group.

Well things definitely did not go as ...

Pakenham Road Race

Pakenham Road Race

After completing the O-Cup TT on Saturday, Andy and I had the rest of the day to do nothing. We had lunch and chilled out at the B&B for a while before heading in to Almonte in the afternoon to watch the crit and cheer on our friend Bayden Pritchard who was racing for Octo-Cervelo. This event was only for the Elite racers who were doing the whole stage race. The 1.5 km course was  fast and technical with tight corners through the streets of downtown Almonte. The ...

Clayton Time Trial O-Cup

Clayton Time Trial O-Cup

The Mississippi Mills Grand Prix Stage Race was the final O-Cup event for 2013. The Elite 1/2 and Masters 1 men would compete in 4 events scheduled over 3 days… The Blakeney Circuit Race, the Clayton Time Trial, The Almonte Crit and the Pakenham Road Race… all other categories could only participate in the Clayton TT and the Pakenham RR. For us, only the time trial counted as part of the O-Cup series.
When I checked out the MMGP on ...

2013 KW Classic

2013 KW Classic

The KW Classic was O-Cup #6 for 2013. The M3 race featured 13 laps of the rolling 4.6 km course for a total of 60 km and 780 m of elevation gain. In a change from previous years, the course was run in a clockwise direction and finished with a 1 km climb averaging about 4% a few hundred meters before the finish line. I figured the hill would string the field out a bit which would suit me better ...

Niagara Classic Road Race

Niagara Classic Road Race

The  2013 Niagara Classic Road Race was O – Cup # 5, held in Pelham on the Niagara escarpment. The course consists of a 12.5 km loop that starts with Effingham hill… a signature climb  to this race which I would  consider to be similar to the Cauberg at the Amstel Gold Race. It’s a real stinger, about 2 km long with a grade that exceeds 11% on the second half for a total gain of 100m. In previous years ...

Lake of Bays Road Race

Lake of Bays Road Race

Mettle was thoroughly tested!

The Lake of Bays Road Race was O-Cup #4 for 2013. It started and finished at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville and included a circuit around the Lake of Bays. The M3 race was 94 km long and included 1 loop of the lake. The course was rolling and included several categorized climbs for a total gain of about 800 m. In theory this course should have suited me better than any of the other shorter, flatter ...

Springbank Park Crit

Springbank Park Crit

First crit… first DNF

Yesterday I competed in my first criterium, the Springbank Park Crit… O-Cup #3. I’d heard and read that crits are fast and crashing is common, and it proved to be pretty true for this experience. It was fast and furious!

Once again Andy Mill joined me from Speed River Cycling Club and I had some company for the ride down to London. After an extremely busy week at work, and only 4 hours sleep the night before, I ...
