My First Time Trial

My First Time Trial

Last week I rode my first time trial with Speed River Cycling Club. The club holds four time trials, one every month, throughout the summer. It’s a great way for participants to set their benchmark time and then assess their fitness and progress through the season.

The club record was set by Ryan Roth:  22:08.49 – 46.07 km/hr  – July 18/12

The course is a 17 km out-and-back route on the rolling hills of Fourth Line East just north of County Road 51 ...

Niagara Classic Road Race

Niagara Classic Road Race

The  2013 Niagara Classic Road Race was O – Cup # 5, held in Pelham on the Niagara escarpment. The course consists of a 12.5 km loop that starts with Effingham hill… a signature climb  to this race which I would  consider to be similar to the Cauberg at the Amstel Gold Race. It’s a real stinger, about 2 km long with a grade that exceeds 11% on the second half for a total gain of 100m. In previous years ...

Lake of Bays Road Race

Lake of Bays Road Race

Mettle was thoroughly tested!

The Lake of Bays Road Race was O-Cup #4 for 2013. It started and finished at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville and included a circuit around the Lake of Bays. The M3 race was 94 km long and included 1 loop of the lake. The course was rolling and included several categorized climbs for a total gain of about 800 m. In theory this course should have suited me better than any of the other shorter, flatter ...

Springbank Park Crit

Springbank Park Crit

First crit… first DNF

Yesterday I competed in my first criterium, the Springbank Park Crit… O-Cup #3. I’d heard and read that crits are fast and crashing is common, and it proved to be pretty true for this experience. It was fast and furious!

Once again Andy Mill joined me from Speed River Cycling Club and I had some company for the ride down to London. After an extremely busy week at work, and only 4 hours sleep the night before, I ...

2013 Calabogie Road Classic

2013 Calabogie Road Classic

Racing to not be last!

Ontario Cup #2 is held at the Calabogie Motorsports Park. It’s a long way from Guelph, but the wide 5 km closed track with 20 corners looked like an awesome event that was too good to miss. Andy Mill joined me from Speed River Cycing Club and we drove the 400+ kilometres up to Renfrew on Saturday afternoon and spent the night there. Saturday’s weather was ugly, with snow, flurries and temperatures that dropped below ...

Hill training at Kelso

Hill training at Kelso

On Monday I didn’t have any appointments and I was planning on getting stuck into a ton of paperwork that really needed to be done. However the weather was supposed to be the nicest it had been so far this year… 19 C and sunny. After such a long winter where I’ve hardly been out on my bike at all, I decided to ditch work and ride down to Milton and get in some hill training.

I’m not a climber. I ...

Good Friday Road Race 2013

Good Friday Road Race 2013

First O-Cup = first ass-kicking!

Yesterday I started my racing season and participated in my first race in the Ontario Cup series… the Good Friday Road Race in Ancaster. It was a chilly morning, around 0 Celsius, when I left Guelph around 6:45am. There was still snow in the fields by the road and it was cloudy and grey. It felt like I was heading to a Spring Classic. But the weather was promising for the day with a forecast of ...

Easton EC90 wheel review

Easton EC90 wheel review

This week was the first time I actually got out and rode on my new Easton EC90 aero wheel set. Outdoor riding has been pretty sparse so far this year and in the little I have done, my pace is below average and I’ve felt pretty sluggish, so to be honest it’s hard to say how much, if any difference these wheels have made yet. I got 100km in on the Eastons during two rides and I did notice a ...

Going for Coffee

Last Saturday the temperature rose to 5 Celsius and some of the guys from Speed River Cycling Club went for an informal ride down to Dundas. The sun was shining and the roads were dry as six of us started out from downtown. This was my first group ride since the one in January and only my third time on the road this year.

There’s a great cycling themed coffee shop called Cafe Domestique in Dundas and it’s about 117km roundtrip ...
