From couch to 5km in 25 minutes

My wife runs almost every day. I bike. That’s just the way it is. She’s a runner, I’m a cyclist.

Then one day, I get curious. I’m in my home office and have just finished a report I was working on. It’s around 10:30 am and I think to myself “I wonder what this running thing is all about… I should at least give it a go… just to see.”

So, I put on some shorts and some training shoes(I don’t own ...

P90X Update 1

So I’ve just completed Week 1 of P90X. It’s been cool to change things up so much after getting into a bit of a rut with my exercise program. Overall, I think P90X is pretty good… except for the yoga.

Day 3
Shoulders and arms – pretty straightforward. First time through, so I was discovering my thresholds and setting some benchmarks for next time. I used weights that challenged me at the 12 to 15 rep level.

Day 4
I’ve always been kinda ...

On the run again : )

20121211-235812.jpg

For the past two months I have been running around 6km almost every day. Sixteen days ago I ran my longest distance yet… just over 9km. I felt fine too. At least until after I got home, then I was noticing some discomfort in my lateral right knee. It got worse overnight and I awoke the next day with enough pain to realize that it was not an injury I could ignore. Prior to ...

Save the bananas!

Do you ever get behind on your banana consumption and end up with over-ripe fruit that’s not really good to eat? If you’re like me, and you hate wasting food, here’s a tip. Throw it in the blender, not the garbage.

This banana smoothie makes a nutritious, balanced, low calorie lunch or breakfast if you’re on the go. It’s got a pretty good dose of potassium and protein  which also makes it a killer recovery drink after a workout, especially if you’ve ...

Skor Bar Creme Brûlée

I believe in rewarding yourself for your hard work. We rarely eat dessert, but  we were having a dinner party with some friends so I made creme brûlée since it’s my wife’s favourite. I crumbled up Skor bar to provide the crunchy topping instead of  the traditional melted brown sugar. No need for a torch and you get a little chocolate bonus!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whipping Cream
  • 2 tsp Vanilla
  • 5 large Egg Yolks
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 2 Skor bars

Preheat oven to 275 F.Heat the cream ...

Weight gain on vacation

Weight gain on vacation

Do you find that you gain weight when you are on vacation? I know that I used to, since I’m not the type to stick to a regular diet when there’s so much good food to eat. But I’m also not the kind of person who sits around by the pool… I like to take advantage of  all the activities available. At the beginning of November I spent a week in Mexico with my wife and eight of our good ...

P90X (the challenge is on)

I feel like I needed to change things up a bit. I have been doing Bob Harper’s Pure Burn strength workout for at least year now, mixing it up with a couple of his other workouts. I had heard a lot about P90X and thought I’d give it try.  I’m determined to stick out the 90 days and see what affect it has… I even took my ‘before’ photos : ) First impressions are positive.

Day 1 was pretty tough. I thought I ...

GoPro Test ride

The weather changed for the better on Sunday. Although it was raining, the snow had melted and it went up to around 11 degrees Celsius. Since I don’t get to ride outside much in the winter, I decided to go for a wet ride and test out my new GoPro camera.

Nutrition

Eating is an important aspect of life so I thought I would  share some of my philosophies, experiences and maybe a few recipes. I have to admit that I am a foodie… I love to cook and really enjoy eating. Probably a bit too much! But I believe in a balanced diet that provides the proper nutrition needed for good health and any physical activity. That doesn’t mean I don’t eat fatty or sugary food, it’s just that I limit the frequency ...

12 months later

This time last year I had broken my leg in 2 places while paying hockey. It was the first winter of my freshman year of ‘getting fit’, and I was determined to make the best of my situation. Every two days I did  as much as I could of Bob Harper’s Pure Burn Strength workout video with my leg in a cast. I was doing the upper body exercises on a stool, or standing on one leg, and I managed ...
