2015 Springbank Road Race

O Cup #3 was the Springbank Road Race and today was my third consecutive year participating. I’ve had mixed results at this criterium style race, held on a narrow 2.2 km course through Springbank Park in London. In 2013 I got dropped with 3 laps to go for the DNF. Then in 2014 I got my best O Cup result ever, finishing 11th in the M3 field. I haven’t done much racing since mid season last year and I didn’t really know what ...

What I did last Summer

What I did last Summer

It’s been so long since I posted anything. Which is a shame cuz I actually wrote several drafts last year that I didn’t get around to posting because I meant to add some photos, or edit before uploading, and then I just never got around to it. There were a few race recaps and a diary of my trip to Northern Ireland for the Giro d’Italia that I just got so sidetracked, and put off for so long, that it seemed outdated. Maybe ...

2014 Springbank Park

Springbank was my second race of the year and I needed to redeem myself after last year’s DNF when I got dropped with 3 laps to go.
The 2.2km course winds through Springbank Park in London and is very narrow in places, with high curbs that can make it difficult to navigate in a pack. I witnessed two crashes in my race last year, and saw another rider launched into the trees after missing the first corner. They say the ...

2014 Good Friday Road Race

It feels like forever since I rode my bike, raced or even updated this blog. After such a long cold winter with almost zero riding since November 2013, I was not feeling very optimistic about my first race of 2014… the Good Friday Road Race. Last year I had stayed with the pack until the final surge for the finish, then my legs gave out and I got dropped, finishing more than 30 seconds behind.
Up until today I had ...

Boys weekend in Ottawa

Boys weekend in Ottawa

2013 Ottawa Granfondo

Last weekend I participated in the second edition of the Ottawa Granfondo with four of the guys from Speed River Cycling Club… Rob, Andy, Colin and “Jimmy” (name changed to protect his identity) . There were four distance options… a 65 km Cortofondo, a 100 km Mediofondo, a 170 km Granfondo and a 220 km Suprfondo.  We signed up for the Suprfondo which ended up being 235 km after a last minute route change. This was the longest bike ride I had ...

Cycling in South Carolina

Cycling in South Carolina

Sassafras Mountain and Caesars Head

For our family vacation this year we decided to drive to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It would be a long, sixteen plus hour drive with four kids so we considered options for a place to stop along the way. I knew that there was some great riding in the Blue Ridge mountains and although it was a bit out of the way, I was able to work it into the itinerary 🙂

I’d heard a lot about ...

Pakenham Road Race

Pakenham Road Race

After completing the O-Cup TT on Saturday, Andy and I had the rest of the day to do nothing. We had lunch and chilled out at the B&B for a while before heading in to Almonte in the afternoon to watch the crit and cheer on our friend Bayden Pritchard who was racing for Octo-Cervelo. This event was only for the Elite racers who were doing the whole stage race. The 1.5 km course was  fast and technical with tight corners through the streets of downtown Almonte. The ...

2013 KW Classic

2013 KW Classic

The KW Classic was O-Cup #6 for 2013. The M3 race featured 13 laps of the rolling 4.6 km course for a total of 60 km and 780 m of elevation gain. In a change from previous years, the course was run in a clockwise direction and finished with a 1 km climb averaging about 4% a few hundred meters before the finish line. I figured the hill would string the field out a bit which would suit me better ...

Niagara Classic Road Race

Niagara Classic Road Race

The  2013 Niagara Classic Road Race was O – Cup # 5, held in Pelham on the Niagara escarpment. The course consists of a 12.5 km loop that starts with Effingham hill… a signature climb  to this race which I would  consider to be similar to the Cauberg at the Amstel Gold Race. It’s a real stinger, about 2 km long with a grade that exceeds 11% on the second half for a total gain of 100m. In previous years ...

Lake of Bays Road Race

Lake of Bays Road Race

Mettle was thoroughly tested!

The Lake of Bays Road Race was O-Cup #4 for 2013. It started and finished at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville and included a circuit around the Lake of Bays. The M3 race was 94 km long and included 1 loop of the lake. The course was rolling and included several categorized climbs for a total gain of about 800 m. In theory this course should have suited me better than any of the other shorter, flatter ...
