Who wants a cold one?

Who wants a cold one?

This winter seems to be going on forever. It’s been 2 months since I’ve ridden outside and although I hate the cold weather, I just had to get out today.

Yesterday I noticed that the roads were pretty dry and you could feel that the temperature was rising. It seemed like I could get a ride in if I would suck it up and brave the cold. Last week at the Toronto Bike Show I made a couple of purchases that ...

My First Spin Class

My First Spin Class

Tonight I finally made it out to an indoor spinning session with Speed River Cycling Club. I was a little worried because I don’t have a stationary type bike trainer and I wasn’t sure how it would work out on rollers. I decided not to clip in… which turned out to be a good move since I did slip off the trainer 3 or 4 times. There were a couple of disadvantages to using rollers but I would consider them ...

2012 Recap

I purchased my first road bike in July 2011, making 2012 my first full year as a road cyclist. In review, the past 12 months included many firsts and milestones, as well as some motivation for goals in 2013. I hadn’t planned on racing, but attended a few mass participation events that I found challenging and strangely gratifying. By the end of the year I had decided to get my race license and try the Ontario Cup racing circuit in ...

Biking in the bedroom

Biking in the bedroom

After a mild December, the snow seems to have finally arrived and it’s getting deeper… And it’s getting colder. I had planned on running all winter, but have taken the last 2 days off due to knee pain. The roads and sidewalks around here seem too treacherous and I’m afraid of slipping and pulling something. I also just had an MRI on my right knee for a nagging injury and am awaiting the results, so I thought I’d be responsible ...

10 Clues you might be a hardcore cyclist

Here are some clues that you might be hardcore 🙂

  • You have holes in your bedroom walls from falling off your rollers during winter training
  • When you go jogging with a buddy, you draft them for most of the way, then in the last kilometer, you attack and go for the solo breakaway
  • When on vacation, you drop the tour guide and your entire family as you time-trial through a sight-seeing bike tour
  • Every time you drive up a hill or mountain, you think ...

Activity tracking

I love how easy it is to track your progress and analyze your workouts. There are a bunch of free apps for your smartphone that will map your runs or rides and provide statistics like speed, distance etc. I started out using RunKeeper, which works great, but have since switched to Endomondo because it includes live tracking of your activities… My wife likes to know where I am, and if I am still moving ...

From couch to 5km in 25 minutes

My wife runs almost every day. I bike. That’s just the way it is. She’s a runner, I’m a cyclist.

Then one day, I get curious. I’m in my home office and have just finished a report I was working on. It’s around 10:30 am and I think to myself “I wonder what this running thing is all about… I should at least give it a go… just to see.”

So, I put on some shorts and some training shoes(I don’t own ...

P90X Update 1

So I’ve just completed Week 1 of P90X. It’s been cool to change things up so much after getting into a bit of a rut with my exercise program. Overall, I think P90X is pretty good… except for the yoga.

Day 3
Shoulders and arms – pretty straightforward. First time through, so I was discovering my thresholds and setting some benchmarks for next time. I used weights that challenged me at the 12 to 15 rep level.

Day 4
I’ve always been kinda ...

On the run again : )

20121211-235812.jpg

For the past two months I have been running around 6km almost every day. Sixteen days ago I ran my longest distance yet… just over 9km. I felt fine too. At least until after I got home, then I was noticing some discomfort in my lateral right knee. It got worse overnight and I awoke the next day with enough pain to realize that it was not an injury I could ignore. Prior to ...

12 months later

This time last year I had broken my leg in 2 places while paying hockey. It was the first winter of my freshman year of ‘getting fit’, and I was determined to make the best of my situation. Every two days I did  as much as I could of Bob Harper’s Pure Burn Strength workout video with my leg in a cast. I was doing the upper body exercises on a stool, or standing on one leg, and I managed ...
